MidSun School adheres to the CBE Administrative Regulations for Student Conduct and Safe and Secure Schools.

We recognize that, just like academic learning, students may require different levels of teaching, guidance and support to develop positive behaviour, relationships and decision-making skills. In conjunction with our CBE Administrative Regulations, our approach is guided by the following principles:

  • All students can experience success and should feel safe, valued and connected at school.
  • Behaviour is a form of communication, and understanding what is contributing to a student's behaviour is an important part of providing appropriate support.
  • Positive relationships matter. Teachers and staff play an important role in knowing, supporting and advocating for their students.
  • Proactive planning and clear expectations help students make positive choices and contribute to a safe and respectful school community.
  • Students, families and school staff working together provides the strongest foundation for addressing ongoing concerns and supporting student success.

Conflict, Bullying and Student Concerns

Disagreements and conflict can occur as students learn to navigate friendships and relationships. Conflict and bullying are not the same, and understanding the circumstances is important in determining the appropriate response and support.

When concerns arise between students, MidSun staff gather information from those involved and consider each situation individually. Our goal is to understand what occurred, ensure student safety, support those involved and determine appropriate next steps.

Bullying involves repeated and targeted behaviour intended to cause harm, fear or distress. Not every disagreement, friendship difficulty or isolated incident is bullying; however, all student concerns are taken seriously.

If your child is experiencing a concern involving another student, please encourage them to speak with a trusted staff member and contact your child's classroom or subject teacher as the first point of contact. If additional support is required, the Assistant Principal or Principal can become involved.

Weapons

Weapons are considered to be any item that in the judgment of a staff member may be used to inflict injury. It is important to note that the student does not need to use a weapon to be guilty of possession of a weapon dangerous to the safety of others. Everyday items used in harmful ways such as paper clips and laser pointers will also be classified as weapons.

It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon (or weapon for the purpose of self-defense) in Canada. Only exceptions are for lawful occupational purposes such as Police Officer.

Serious Situations of Misconduct

The following are considered to be serious examples of misconduct and may result in immediate suspension to home, which requires parents to meet with administration to discuss reinstatement of the student in classes. Serious misconduct includes the following: Use, possession of, or active contact with weapons, threats or harassment, violence/assault/fighting, vandalism, use, possession of, distribution of, or active contact with drugs or alcohol, criminal activity, defiance of authority, obscene or abusive language, smoking/vaping on school grounds or in sight of the school.

Smoking and Vaping

Students are not allowed to smoke or vape in the school, on the school grounds, or within sight of the school. It is strictly prohibited and illegal. Students will be subject to discipline up to and including suspension. Students are also asked to not bring to school any item associated with smoking, such as cigarettes, E-cigarettes, lighters or matches – they will be taken away from students permanently.

Drugs / Alcohol

MidSun School is a drug and alcohol free environment. Students who are in possession of illegal drugs or alcohol, related paraphernalia, or who come to school under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol, will be suspended from school. Reinstatement will include the student, parents and school administration working together on re-entry conditions. These conditions may include referral to an outside agency for counseling/assessment Youth Addictions, police involvement, and/or restriction of school privileges.
