Grade 9 Families - High School Course Recommendation

When you are transitioning from elementary to middle school, or from middle school to high school, you will be automatically registered at your designated school according to your home address.

Centennial High School guidance counsellors have been working with our Grade 9 students to register them for their Grade 10 courses. On Wednesday, February 12 teachers will be sending home course registration forms, which include course recommendations for their Grade 10 core courses. It is important to note that Centennial’s guidance counsellors will be registering students in the courses they were recommended for by their teachers. Teachers at Centennial High School take the recommendations of the junior high teachers seriously as they know the academic skill levels of each student. Teachers use a wide range of evidence when considering course recommendations and recommendations are based on where teachers feel students will achieve success.

The achievement indicators are established measures which express the extent your child has demonstrated understanding of the outcomes that a student is expected to know and be able to do. These measures on an indicator scale of 1-4 are: 1 – Not meeting, 2 – Basic, 3 – Good, 4 – Excellent.

Generally, students who have received an outcome of Level 1 or Level 2 are recommended for courses such as ELA 10-2, Social 10-2, Science 14 and Math 10-3. Students who received an outcome Level 3 and Level 4 are recommended for courses such as ELA 10-1, Social 10-1, Science 10 and Math 10C. Those students who achieve outcomes at Level 4 and have a passion for the subject area are often recommended for Advanced Placement courses.

All students have an opportunity between now and the end of the school year to improve their understanding of course outcomes. If teachers have identified that a student has raised their outcome level, they will meet with the student in May/June and let them know there is an opportunity to change their pathway. MidSun will notify Centennial of any changes in June. Parents may dispute teacher recommendations with Centennial in September.

What Do School Lunch Fees Cover at MidSun School?

We have received some questions in our main office about whether all parents are required to pay lunch fees and how these fees are used to support lunch activities for students.

At the October 2024 School Council meeting, we shared details about how lunch fees are allocated. These fees help cover the cost of items used during the lunch hour, such as band-aids, ice packs, lunchroom tables, sports equipment, club supplies, and more.

Thank you for your continued support in creating a positive lunchtime experience for all students!

Outstanding Fees

Please check your student’s MyCBE account to ensure all outstanding fees are paid. A Monthly reminder will be sent to families with outstanding balances for field trips and fees.  Partial payments are accepted throughout our school year.

Athletic Teams

If your student is/was part of a MidSun athletic team (soccer, basketball or wrestling) please make sure your fees are paid. At this time we have a number of unpaid team fees, so please double check your school account.  Here is the link:   https://sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/
