Parking and Student Drop Off🚗
We need your help. Please Choose SAFETY over CONVENIENCE .
As you are getting into your new routine for picking up and dropping off your students at school please remain mindful of traffic signs, speed limits and the many students walking to school. Sharing our space with Fish Creek School means there are twice the parents and students trying to safely navigate parking lots and streets.
Parent Parking & Exit/Entry Procedures
As a school, we value our partnership with our parent community, as we endeavor to work collaboratively in order to create a safe and caring environment for our children. This includes creating a safe and caring journey to and from school as well as during our school day, for our students and families. The following information is in an effort to communicate expectations for our community regarding parking, pedestrian safety, entry and exit procedures, and security with our building.
Neighborhood Courtesy
A reminder to all parents to be courteous with regards to our community neighbors. Please be mindful of driveways, cul-de-sacs, sidewalks and congestion during our busy times. Bylaw officers regularly patrol the area and complaints will be directed to their office by community members.
Parking and Drop Off Zones
Our parking lot is for staff only and families with identified needs to access our parking lot. All visitors and parents are asked to park on the side streets, especially during our peak drop off times at 8:45 - 9:05 AM and 3:40 - 4:05 PM. In order to ensure the safety of our children and to alleviate congestion and confrontation, it is essential that parents DO NOT drive into the parking lots to drop off or pick up their child. Please do not use the entrance driveways to turn your vehicle around. This causes unnecessary congestion and limited visibility that places our students at risk. A reminder that there are signs posted on either side of the entrances that indicate No Access to School Parking Lots.
The pull through lane is for our small yellow buses, and Southbound Sunmills Drive and Eastbound Suncastle Drive are bus zones for our big yellow buses so please arrange to meet your students on one of the other side streets around our school. For the safety of our students, parents are asked to use on of the other side streets around our school. We thank you for your cooperation and help to ensure the front of our school is safe for all.
There should be no parking within 5 meters of the crosswalks. Encourage your children to use the designated crosswalk areas to avoid jaywalking. Administration consults with our local city bylaw to help reinforce parking in our crosswalk areas and speed limits. Cars that are in violation of the posted signs may be ticketed.
Attendance
It is important that you call the school if your child is going to be absent or arriving late. Remember to report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-6430 ext. 1, or email midsun@cbe.ab.ca and include the date, your child's name, homeroom and the reason for the absence or late arrival. See more on our Attendance page. Our office staff will be following up with the families of all students reported ill to follow the protocols outlined by AHS.

NEW Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media Use in Schools 📵
Dear CBE Families,As you may have already heard, CBE is implementing restrictions on Personal Mobile Device & Social Media Use in Schools effective August 29. This policy will comply with the Ministerial Order provided by the Government of Alberta this past June based on survey feedback provided by families.
CBE cares about the mental health and well-being of students. Restricting access to personal mobile devices and social media is expected to improve student achievement and learning outcomes. CBE strongly recommends students simply leave their devices at home, because in most cases, personal mobile devices are not needed to support student learning.
For students in kindergarten to Grade 9, CBE will use ‘Away for the Day’ guidelines similar to what many schools have been using in recent years. Personal mobile devices brought to school including cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers/headphones or any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet must be powered off or set in silent mode and stored out of sight in student lockers, backpacks or other designated area for the duration of the school day.
If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class without permission from the teacher, the CBE will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected. When necessary, schools will use a progressive student discipline approach in working with students.
Our MidSun plan is to allow for an opportunity of information sharing, reminders and education for our students about the changes with the Ministerial Order. This will take place August 29 – September 13 to allow all students an opportunity to put into practice the new policy. On September 16, our response to any infraction will follow a progressive discipline approach with the following Protocol for MidSun School.
Student personal mobile devices will be sent with student to the main office to meet with an administrator. Personal mobile device will be labelled with student name, homeroom, date and time.
- 1st Warning – Student will bring their personal mobile device to the office, speak with an Administrator and pick it up at the end of the day.
- 2nd Warning – Administrator phone call to parents to inform of 2nd infraction, personal mobile device will remain in the office for the remainder of the day.
- 3rd Infraction – Administrator phone call to parents to arrange pick up of personal mobile device from school and further discussion around future compliance of the policy.
These new rules will apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device for health and medical needs, please contact one of our School Administrators to assist with this request.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device to support an identified educational need, families should contact the school to discuss this being included as an accommodation or support in the student’s individual program plan (IPP). For English as an Additional Language Learners who require access to a personal mobile device, a new PMD Exception form will be approved by School Administration in conversation with parents/guardians.
Also, aligned with the Ministerial Order, the CBE will restrict student access to all known social media platforms on the CBE network.
This policy will be in place for the first day of school. However, it is set to be reviewed in December, 2024. At that time, any feedback from schools will be considered before the Administrative Regulation is finalized as of January 1, 2025.
Thank you for helping us to make this transition successful. For further resources, please view additional information on our CBE website.
